Middle School Athletics 2024 Spring Season Registration Is Now Open

Practices for flag football and cheerleading will be held at the middle school site.

As part of our pilot program, wrestling will be offered in a cluster format. For example, students attending Kearny High School’s feeder middle schools of Taft and Montgomery who are interested in wrestling will attend tryouts and practices at Kearny High School. Both middle schools will come together to form one team, known as Komet Wrestling.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students of Middle School Athletics teams,

Your school site has enough students to form a team this fall season in boys & girls basketball, and track & field.

Tryouts will begin next week on your school’s assigned days. Please have your students from both sports meet the coaches at the basketball courts on campus.
This is the schedule that we have committed to for the first two weeks of the season that include tryouts/practice: MSA Fall 2023-2024 Tryout/Practice Schedule.  In preparation for next week’s tryouts here are few suggestions for students athletes.  Be on time, bring plenty of water, and wear comfortable athletic attire.  Day 1 of tryouts is always the busiest with checking in the student athletes which will cut into instruction time.  Please remember these tryouts are closed to the parents/guardians as the coaches have limited amount of time with the athletes. Thank you for your understanding.

There will be two weeks of tryouts/practice where students are still able to sign-up and participate before coaches need to submit a final roster to the Athletics Office.

As we have looked at sign-ups, we’ve noticed that some of the school sites have extremely large sign-ups so I ask parents to really consider if their student can make the commitment to practice twice a week and commit to two games (basketball) and one track meet (track &field) on Saturdays at high school sites.  We realize that families have multiple options for their child’s health and athletic well-being. Many students participate on outside organizations and while I appreciate that, I also would hate to have a child not make a team because a spot was taken by a student who may have been more talented but can’t actually make the necessary commitment.

I understand that communication with you is critical and until teams are finalized and coaches take over the responsibility of communication with their teams, the communication about matters such as weather conditions/cancellations/game schedules, etc. has to go through our office.

If you’re interested in coaching middle school track & field please complete the interest form.  Track & Field Coaching Interest

We will update districtwide changes/expectations/rules/etc. on our Middle School Athletics district website located at https://sdusdathletics.com/middle-schools/

We appreciate your participation in Middle School Athletics and look forward to the start of year two of SDUSD Middle School Athletics. Thanks.

Best,

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS WINTER SEASON WEEK 8 RECAP

——–
(Updated March 20, 2023)

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS SPRING SEASON UPDATE

Our policy for SDUSD Middle School Athletics (MSA) is to usually try to wait until the morning of to make decisions about the weather and then let school sites make individual decisions because every geographical area and playing surface is different throughout the District. With rain forecasted for the rest of the week throughout the City, the SDUSD Athletics Office has made a unilateral decision to postpone all middle school flag football tryouts for the duration of this week due to anticipated bad weather. We will resume tryouts upon our return from Spring Break on April 3. Coaches are being alerted that they must still have a minimum of two days of tryouts before deciding on teams. Those two days of tryouts will be the next two scheduled days per this schedule upon our return from Spring Break: Spring 2023 Practice Schedule. Until coaches/teams are set, decisions as it pertains to practices/tryouts, including weather decisions, will be made centrally from the SDUSD Athletics Office. A message is being sent to all parents/guardians of students who registered as we have those emails from the sign-up form.

The start of the Flag Football season remains April 15th and our office anticipates having the first two weeks of the flag football game schedule released by the end of this week.

For any questions, please check our Middle School Athletics District website located at https://sdusdathletics.com/middle-schools/ or contact Lonnie Jones, our SDUSD Middle School Athletics Coordinator at Ljones3@sandi.net.

We appreciate your participation in Middle School Athletics. Thank you.

(Updated March 16, 2023)

Hello Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for your interest and patience with the SDUSD Middle School Athletics (MSA) spring flag football season.  In preparation for next week’s tryouts, here are a few suggestions for student-athletes:

  1. Bring plenty of water
  2. Wear comfortable athletic attire
  3. Rubber cleats (no metal) are suggested but not mandatory
  4. Mouthpiece is suggested but not mandatory

Day 1 of tryouts is always the busiest with checking in the student-athletes which will cut into instruction time.  Please remember these tryouts are closed to the parents/guardians as the coaches have a limited amount of time with the athletes.

Thank you for your understanding.

Please see the message below from Scott Giusti, Director of Athletics for the San Diego Unified School District:

This email is being sent to the email addresses that were submitted via the Google Form application for student sign-ups. We will also post the information on the SDUSD Middle School Athletics website.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students of Middle School Athletics teams,

Your school site has enough students to form a team this spring season in either boys flag football or girls flag football (or both teams).

Tryouts will begin next week on your school’s assigned days.

This is the schedule that our coaches have committed to for the first two weeks of the season that include tryouts/practice: 2022-23 MSA Spring Flag Football Practice Schedule

There will be two weeks of tryouts/practice where students are still able to sign-up and participate before coaches need to submit a final roster to the Athletics Office.

Here is a current update on where the two programs (boys and girls flag football) are:

  • Girls: We are seeking coach candidates that are not only interested in coaching our girls middle school flag football team, but could also potentially coach the newly approved CIF sport of girls flag football at the high school level next year. We are extremely excited to see this program grow and to look at the development of our girls middle school flag football teams as a key component to growing the sport at the high school level. We are developing the program but may adjust some things once CIF releases their official rules.
  • Boys:The high school football coaching staffs of your local high school football teams will be coming down to teach/coach flag football as a part of our middle school programs. I would currently consider this a more established program based on that experience.

Flag football will definitely be different from any sport that we have previously fielded with larger team rosters, more teams, higher expectations for students to commit to practices, possible time changes for practice, as well as some practices possibly being moved on certain dates to the high school, etc. The game itself will not be a traditional flag football game.

This will be the single largest sports season we have had. We’ve had over 2000 students sign up for flag football and this allows us to have 46 middle school flag football teams.

As we have looked at sign-ups, we’ve noticed that some of the school site boys programs have extremely large sign-ups so I ask parents to really consider if their student can make the commitment to practice twice a week and commit to two games on Saturdays at high school sites. In the spring we realize that students have multiple options for their child’s health and athletic well-being. Many students participate on outside organizations in the spring seasons and while I appreciate that, I also would hate to have a child not make a team because a spot was taken by a student who may have been more talented but can’t actually make the necessary commitment.

I understand that communication with you is critical and until teams are finalized and coaches take over the responsibility of communication with their teams, the communication about matters such as weather conditions/cancellations/game schedules, etc. has to go through our office.

We will update districtwide changes/expectations/rules/etc. on our Middle School Athletics district website located at https://sdusdathletics.com/middle-schools/

Lonnie Jones, our SDUSD Middle School Athletics Coordinator, will be emailing your Middle School Site Principals with the name for the coach(es) at your site as well as other information about the upcoming season so they are informed, but if you have specific questions, please refer those to Mr. Jones at Ljones3@sandi.net

We appreciate your participation in Middle School Athletics and look forward to our most successful season yet. Thanks.

Middle School Athletics Update- Sat 2/25 Soccer Games Postponed

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

The health and well-being of students is our first priority and is of utmost importance. The Athletics, PE and Health Department regularly monitors weather conditions for San Diego County and within each of our cluster school areas. Due to the expected rain and as a precautionary measure, we have decided to postpone the outdoor Middle School Athletics soccer games scheduled for Saturday, February 25th. Please refer to communication from your coach and to your team’s practice schedule for next week’s events.

The decision to postpone Middle School Athletics soccer games scheduled for Saturday, February 25th does NOT impact middle school volleyball or high school athletic programs.

As it pertains to rescheduling this week’s postponed soccer matches, we will continue to monitor weather conditions and will notify coaches and families as soon as a decision has been made.

Thank you,

Athletics, PE and Health Department

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS SCHEDULE AND ROSTER UPDATES

Middle school athletic team rosters of the schools that completed two (2) days of tryouts are posted on the San Diego Unified Middle School Athletics website under the rosters tab. Schools that were only able to complete one (1) day of tryouts will have their rosters posted within 24 hours of completion of their second tryout. Weeks 1 & 2 pool play game schedules with times and locations are currently posted on the middle school athletics website under the schedules tab for each sport. We are looking for an additional high school to host soccer games and we will notify teams directly if their game is impacted with a move to a different time/location.

Each team will have two regularly scheduled practices per week: Middle School Winter 2023 Practice Schedule. If you do not see your middle school listed, it means there were not enough sign-ups to field a team. If you see a box with an “X” in it, that indicates there is no practice on that day.

Practice in the first week will include a review of the following:

  • Plans for uniform distribution and return of uniforms
  • Team expectations from the coach
  • Commitment to game and practice schedule

Finalizing a roster is always a challenging time for every coach. If you have a specific question about the team roster, please reach out to Lonnie Jones, San Diego Unified Middle School Athletics Coordinator at ljones3@sandi.net.

We have the following sports currently scheduled:

Winter: Boys & Girls Soccer and Boys & Girls Volleyball

Spring: Boys Flag Football & Girls Flag Football

We look forward to your student(s) participating throughout the year.

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

The tryout times at your middle school for the week of January 9, can be found on this middle school tryout practice schedule. If you do not see your middle school listed, it means there were not enough sign-ups to field a team. If you see a box with an “X” in it, that indicates there is no practice on that day.

Please have your students meet their coaches in the PE area.  Students should wear comfortable attire and closed-toed shoes.  Please have your students bring a water bottle as well.

Based on the adjusted timeline, the announcement of teams will be posted on the SDUSD Middle School Athletics website at https://sdusdathletics.com/middle-schools/ on Monday, January 16th.

The full season of scheduled contests with times and locations will be released on January 16th with our first contests taking place on Saturday, January 21st.

There are 15 spots per volleyball team & 20 spots per soccer team thus finalizing a roster is always a challenging time for every coach. We encourage you to have your student attend both days next week thus giving the coach a chance to assess each player’s ability.

We are looking forward to an exciting year of Middle School Athletics. For questions, please contact Lonnie Jones at Ljones3@sandi.net or by phone at 619-725-7440.

There is a track & field change of venue for this Saturday, October 1, 2022. The track meet scheduled to be held at Patrick Henry High School on Saturday, October 1, 2022, has been moved to San Diego High School. Patrick Henry High School is NOT hosting a track meet on Saturday.
Please verify below where your team is competing on October 1st:

CHANGES TO BOYS BASKETBALL DIVISIONS AFTER WEEK #2:
The heat wave that occurred during the opening of MSA forced us to revise tryouts which resulted in a cancellation of the scrimmages. We had hoped to use the “scrimmage week” to help define what schools should be playing in what divisions.
In the spirit of good sportsmanship and in trying to have competitive games, the MSA Office will be adjusting the boys leagues after week #2. The record that a team has earned the first two weeks will transfer with them as they move divisions. While there is no perfect league where every team is equal, we are trying to establish contests that can be competitive and fun for all.

CHANGES TO BOYS BASKETBALL SCHEDULES:
Based on the changes to divisions after week #2, there will be a revised game schedule that comes out on Tuesday, October 4, 2022. The MSA Office will strive to minimize the current game time impacts to as many schools as possible.

“We’re Next”…MSA rosters have now been released (9/18/2022)

Middle School Athletics (MSA) are here and middle school student athletes want us to know, “We’re Next”, as they look forward to the fall season and their time in the spotlight.

The team rosters for the fall 2022-23 San Diego Unified Middle School Athletics season have officially been released.

Please click on this link and locate your school: Middle School Athletic Rosters

If you have a specific question about the team roster, please reach out to Lonnie Jones, SDUSD Middle School Coordinator at ljones3@sandi.net.

Each team will have two regularly scheduled practices per week: Middle School Fall 2022 Practice Schedule

  • If you see a box with an “X” in it, that indicates there is no practice on that day.
  • If you do not see your middle school listed, it means there were not enough sign ups to field a team at your school.

Due to the large number of middle schools that have teams, additional high school facilities are needed and currently being reserved.  The full season of scheduled contests with times and locations will be posted on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 (and not on Monday, September 19th as previously communicated), at MSA Basketball Schedule or MSA Track & Field Schedule

The Middle School Athletics Coordinator will work with sites and coaches on eligibility, but the expectation for all student athletes is that they are role models on their campus.  A student athlete’s participation in middle school athletics is a privilege, not a right, and a student athlete’s eligibility can be revoked by the school for not representing themselves, the school, or the community in a positive manner.

The same expectations as high school athletics are in effect for middle school athletics in that you prioritize and attend your school’s team practices and games over club or travel ball.  We understand if you aren’t able to commit but if that is the case, we ask that you let your coach know so that they have the opportunity to fill that spot on the roster with someone who can make the full commitment.

As we move forward towards the start of the regular season, we ask our families to click on the link and watch this brief video from the State CIF Commissioner, Ron Nocetti, on expectations for parents/guardians and spectators as we continue to Be the Change.

Thank you for your interest and support of Middle School Athletics and good luck with the season.

Middle School Athletics Update (9/9/2022)

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

Due to the challenges with regards to the heat temperatures this past week, the Athletics Department has adjusted the timeline for the fall middle school athletics season. To ensure all sites/coaches are given equitable time to evaluate student athletes, we are allowing an additional week of tryouts/practices during the week of September 12th through the 16th. This time will be utilized as extended evaluation time by coaching staffs to select the team that will represent your middle school in its respective sport of basketball or track.

The practice times at your middle school for next week can be found on this Middle School Tryout Practice Schedule. If you do not see your middle school listed, it means there were not enough sign ups to field a team. If you see a box with an “X” in it, that indicates there is no practice on that day.

Based on the adjusted timeline, the announcement of teams will be posted on the SDUSD Middle School Athletics website at https://sdusdathletics.com/middle-schools/ on Sunday, September 18th.

By announcing teams on that date it allows each middle school to have two regularly scheduled practices with their teams the week of September 19-23rd.

The full season of scheduled contests with times and locations will be released September 19th with our first contests taking place on Saturday, September 24th.

There are 15 spots per team and thus finalizing a roster is always a challenging time for every coach. We encourage you to have your student attend both days next week thus giving the coach a chance to assess each player’s ability.

We are looking forward to an exciting year of Middle School Athletics.
